Elements of Photographic Composition Seminar with Ralph Velasco Saturday, October 30 — 10.00 a.m to 12.00 p.m. The process of intentionally organizing and presenting the visual elements that make up a photograph is referred to as “composition” and all images are confined to a specific area, that which is surrounded by the frame. Controlling what’s within that frame, or equally as important, what should be left out, can be the difference between a snapshot and a real keeper. Learn to create impact with your photography by developing skills such as creative use of design elements including lines, patterns, textures and color. We’ll also explore a number of photographic principles including the Rule of Thirds, proper use of negative space, symmetry and balance, among other basic and intermediate photography concepts. No camera necessary for class. About Ralph Velasco Southern California-based professional photographer Ralph Velasco is an international tour guide and author of “Ralph Velasco on Travel Photography: 101 Tips for Developing Your Photographic Eye & More.” He teaches at a number of U.S. Calumet Photo locations including Hollywood, San Francisco and Chicago, among others. Additionally, he’s the host of the upcoming Travel Photography Podcast and founder of PhotoWalkingTours.com. Photo Walking Tour across the Thames with Ralph Velasco Sunday, October 31 — 8.00 a.m to 12.00 p.m. Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate The meeting point is just outside of the Westminster tube station where you will then shoot in this area for a bit. Eventually you will work your way over the bridge and along the south bank of the Thames. Passing the London Eye in Jubilee Gardens, you will continue up to Waterloo Bridge and by the National Theatre. Then you will make your way to Millennium Bridge, a true site to see and capture in photographs. Once you have had enough of this location you will carry on, passing Shakespeare’s Globe and the London Bridge, with your ultimate goal being the Tower Bridge, where the tour will end. This route is not set in stone, and may have to be modified or changed taking into consideration factors beyond our control, but you will surely enjoy the sites you will see and the information provided regarding how to better capture a small part of one of the world’s great cities. This is not an historical tour of London, but a Photo Walking Tour where we proceed at your pace, and we will try to cover as much ground as possible, with our ultimate goal being to shoot from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge, and all points in between. What to expect: There''s an old saying that "in photography, there''s no such thing as bad weather, just varying degrees of good weather," so be prepared for any kind of conditions. Unusual weather typically makes for unique photo opportunities, so we''ll shoot rain or shine! However, check the weather as close to tour time as possible in order to have an idea of what to expect, but, as you know, London weather can change on a dime, so you''ll want to wear the correct clothing, and that typically means LAYERS!We recommend that you wear lots of layers, have water repellent clothing and even bring a hat and gloves, just in case, because we will shoot no matter what, so please come prepared. You may also want to bring a towel and lens cleaning kit for your gear, a small umbrella probably wouldn''t be a bad idea, either. What to bring: Event Details
